If you enjoy art then you
will love visiting the Limerick City
Art Gallery. As well as being the home
to a great collection of Irish paintings,
visitors will also find the National
Collection of Contemporary Drawing
on show. The collection of Contemporary
Drawings, should not be missed as it
showcases how a range of human emotions
can be portrayed on paper and provides
an interesting insight into the thoughts
and inner feelings of the artist. Within
the gallery there is so much to see
that guests should schedule sufficient
time to be able to view everything
at their leisure.
The Painting Collection showcases work
that dates from the 18th Century and
spans the centuries until the present
day. There is a huge variety of styles
that represent the great variety of
trends that occupied this period. There
is also a sculpture exhibition which
hosts work from a number of artists
who create this intricate form of art.
Every year this fantastic gallery hosts
the ev+a exhibition which is displayed
throughout the city. Work from a broad
spectrum of fields is displayed, including
painting, sculpture, photography, drawing,
installation and new media. The ev+a
exhibition began in 1977 and has grown
in popularity ever since. Each year
a new curator will select the theme
of the exhibition, which will show
the works of both national and international
artists. Whilst the centre of this
exhibition will be the art gallery
itself, a number of other venues are
often used throughout the city.
The Limerick City Art Gallery is located
on Pery Square and is easily accessible
within the main city. The Limerick
Printmakers Studio and Gallery is another
excellent place to visit for those
into the arts. The Studio and Gallery
offers printmaking facilities as well
as hosting exhibitions and events.
They also run an educational program
for those wishing to learn more and
get involved. If you are an artist
yourself, you should arrange to visit
the Contact Studios, which offer individual
spaces for those involved in the visual
arts. These studios are a great place
to create your work as well as display
them.
As well as being the home of some fantastic
art, Limerick also boasts some great,
shops, restaurant and bars to keep
visitors entertained. Other tourist
attractions in the city include King
John’s Castle, the Hunt Museum
and St Mary’s Cathedral. To find
out more about the history of Limerick
then a visit to the Jim Kemmy Municipal
Museum is recommended for its educational
displays about the town. The third
