Seán Ó Súilleabháin – is regarded as one of
Ireland’s foremost walking experts. He has been an avid hiker/walker all
his life and is a contributor to guidebooks as well as author of the classic
Walk Guide - Southwest of Ireland. He is a certified Mountain Leader and a former
Controller of the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team. As a Director of Go Ireland, and
a member of the local hiking club, he devotes much time to walking and planning
walks.
He founded the premier long distance waymarked route in Ireland, The Kerry Way,
thus conserving earlier lines of travel and access to historic sites, and he
still chairs the voluntary committee that aims to maintain and extend the route.
Seán's use of the Gaelic version of his name reflects his passion for
Irish folklore and history. A native Kerryman, he is active in his Local History
Society and has edited its publications. He has been involved in a number of
environmental campaigns, being Chairman of the Kerry Association of An Taisce
(the National Trust for Ireland) for three years.
