Its remoteness, it
has been so far left untouched by mass
tourism.
For those who enjoy history, archaeological
remains from pre-history
mingle with romantic castle ruins, stone
circles, wedge graves and
ring forts are all set in dramatic scenery – mountain,
lake, rock and
sea. It is a unique place that has something
to offer everyone – cross
a raging stretch of sea in Ireland’s
only cable car, or visit Garnish
Island, a once barren, rocky island that
has been transformed into
a beautiful exotic garden with a Grecian
temple. Altogether, the
Beara Peninsula is a magical place that
will tempt you to return
again and again.
This week- long tour is two centred staying
in the pretty town of
Glengarriff & the thriving fishing
port of Castletownbere. Routes,
with a variety of ground underfoot, are
from 10 to 14 km (6 to 10
miles) each day and take you along sections
of the Beara Way.
• The pretty village of Glengarriff, situated at the scenic head of Bantry
Bay.
•
Boat trip to the Jewel in Glengarriff’s crown – Garnish Island.
•
Colourful fishing port of Castletownbere – with its lively pubs and craft
shops
•
Boat trip to and walk on Beara island
•
Hungry Hill (subject of Daphne de Maurier novel)
•
A trip on Irelands only cable car to Dursey Island followed by a walk on the
island.
The car will accommodate eight persons or one person and one cow and maybe a
calf!!
•
Irish song, music and dance
20.30 hrs. Dinner/welcome briefing with guide. Overnight
Glengariff
(2 nights).
Today’s walk starts in Co. Kerry and follows an old ‘coffin’ trail
over
the flanks of Esk Mountain to Glengarriff. Then take the
ferry to
visit the famous gardens of Garnish Island. This island
is renowned
for its unique gardens that enjoy a climate that is almost
subtropical,
making it possible for beautiful ornamental plants from
many parts of the world to flourish.
The first leg of the way is from Glengarriff to Adrigole
on the now
disused coach road. Through the woods of Magannagan, over
the
saddle/col under the Sugarloaf Mountain, and by the road
to
Adrigole, gaining views of Whiddy Island and the Sheep’s
Head
Peninsula. Overnight Castletownbere (5 nights).
A delightful coastal walk from the pier to Ardnakinna Point
lighthouse and up to Coomastooka to enjoy the views over
Castletownbere. Then follow the Beara Way back to the pier
along
the Northern Road.
Relax in Castletownbere or cycle to the local castle ruins
of Dunboy
Castle (15th C) and Puxley Hall. Shore fishing, golfing
and shopping
in Castletownbere are options also.
Discover Comnagapple Glen, an ancient landscape of rock
and bog
overlooked by the massive bulk of Hungry Hill. Bog tracks
take you
through desolate areas where turf (peat) was cut for domestic
fuel
over the last centuries. Continue past a megalithic tomb
(3,000 BC
approx) into Castletownbere.
Enjoy a trip on Irelands only cable car to Dursey Island,
which can
accommodate eight persons or one person and one cow! Walk
to
the tip of the island, overlooking the Bull, the Cow and
the Calf
Rocks (this is as far as you can walk in Ireland!!). Return
through the
village of Tilickafinna, passing the signal tower – a
relic of the
defences from the Napoleonic wars. Also a bird watchers
paradise.
