As the beginning of the Skellig Michael Island landing boat trip season begins this Sunday May 14th learn a bit more about these amazing islands!
Did you know the word Skellig (Sceilig) means Sea Rock?
In Ireland we tend to understate! These mere ‘rocks’ rise out of the Atlantic like towering ice-bergs, 300 feet almost vertical above the booking waves. But not like ice bergs because they don’t melt! The schists and slates of which they are composed have stood unmoved by the fiercest storms the North Atlantic can throw at them for millions of years!
Almost vertical? It’s amazing how the thousands and thousands gannets can hatch eggs on the sheer walls of Little Skellig (more understatement!)
And how the Irish Monks 1300 years ago cut stone steps to clamber precariously upwards to their little stone beehive shaped cells on Skellig Michael, named after their dedicated Saint.
The span of geological time, the wonder of wildlife adaptation, the witness of undaunting human spirit- all combine to make a visit ‘out here’ a meditative and moving experience.
The 2017 landing season runs until October 2nd so don’t miss your opportunity this year and book with us today.
